Steamboat Springs holds a lot of its own unique history and culture. Many creative traditions were established as a way to bring the community together during long winters and vibrant summers. Check out our breakdown on some of our favorite Steamboat annual traditions!
Winter Carnival
2022 will mark the 109th Annual Winter Carnival in Steamboat Springs. The carnival — established as a way to help residents cope with the long winters of Colorado — created the carnival to celebrate winter. Neighbors gathered back then as they do today for ski jumping, snow sculpting, street slalom, ski joring and even a shovel race (there’s a horse involved – that’s all we’ll say). More recent additions to the carnival include the famous ‘Lighted Man’, the World’s Largest Firework, and the Diamond Hitch Parade. This is one of our most beloved events – so make sure you book your Steamboat Springs lodging well in advance!
Cowboy Downhill
This year was the Cowboy Downhill’s 47th Anniversary at Steamboat Ski Resort. 40 years ago, famous local olympian Billy Kidd got together with Larry Mahan, World Champion cowboy. The two invited local cowboys out for a day on the resort which quickly became what we know today as the Cowboy Downhill. Over 100 professional rodeo cowboys and cowgirls come to the resort to test their ability on a pair of skis — a wildly entertaining and incomparably unique Steamboat tradition.
Hot Air Ballon Rodeo
41 years ago, Steamboat created the stunning Hot Air Balloon Rodeo. Over 20 balloon will fill the sky in the early mornings of the weekend, a spectacle like no other. The tradition is iconic as they have even added a balloon glow in the evenings at the base of Steamboat Resort. Gather at Bald Eagle Lake or sit on the deck of your south-facing Steamboat Springs Vacation Rental (see our available homes!) and watch as the spectacular colors fill the sky.
All of these heart-warming events are anticipated by locals and tourists alike. We are so proud to live in a community that works hard to bring our city together for fun, beauty, and celebration of history and culture. These are can’t miss, popular events!
